From Maternity Leave to Making Magic: My Journey Into Graphic Design

Almost three years ago, I found myself at a major crossroads in life.

I was pregnant with my second daughter, working from home for an insurance company, and spending my days on back-to-back calls. My husband was working at a small construction company alongside several of my family members. There were only six employees in total, and despite being praised often for going above and beyond, my husband kept getting passed over for the raises he was promised. If it wasn’t empty promises, it was something out of our control—like COVID—getting in the way.

I remember him coming to me when I was about eight months pregnant and saying, “What if we start our own moving company?” My first reaction was fear. We were about to bring another child into the world. I was preparing for maternity leave, and the idea of risking our already tight income felt overwhelming.

But that night, I prayed. I thought long and hard. The truth hit me hard: the company he was working for wasn’t going to change. It had been five years and was still stuck in the same place. No growth. No real opportunity. Just a cycle.

So, we took the risk. We leaped, quit the jobs that weren’t serving our future, and started building our own moving company from the ground up.

It wasn’t easy at first. My husband picked up jobs here and there, but the consistency we needed wasn’t there. That’s when I asked myself, “How can I help?”

With no marketing background, I sat down at the computer and started designing flyers, social media posts—anything to get our name out there. Then I realized we needed a website, but we couldn’t afford to hire a developer. So I rolled up my sleeves and started learning.

I built our company’s first website myself. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked. And soon after, family members started noticing. They asked if I could create websites and graphics for their own businesses. That’s when something clicked: I loved doing this.

I loved watching the numbers roll in, the clicks go up, and the recognition of something I built with my own two hands. I started watching tutorials, joining design communities, experimenting with software, learning to code—and I couldn’t stop. I didn’t want to stop.

Somewhere in the late nights and baby snuggles, I realized: I never went back to my old job… and I didn’t miss it. I had found something that lit a fire in me.

Now, graphic and web design isn’t just something I do—it’s my business. It’s my passion. And every day I get to help other dreamers, small business owners, and entrepreneurs bring their vision to life—just like we did.

This blog is the next step in my journey. I’m excited to share what I’ve learned, what I’m learning, and how I’m continuing to grow—both as a designer and a mom building something of my own.

If you're just starting out, scared to take that leap, or unsure of your next step—just know, I've been there. And you can absolutely create something amazing from the ground up.
